Episode 108

Google and YouTube, Bethesda & Sound Effects

Show broadcast on 12 March 2016

A technological revelation in this week's podcast astounded Elis & John, and there was a revelation in Textual Healing too as the boys were actually able to solve a listener's problem. John regaled us with tales of a gig in Newcastle, and Elis came up with an idea for a new feature. All this plus a special Email Of The Species (RIP Ray Tomlinson), Winner Plays On, Humble Brag Of The Week, and of course a Keep It Session Session.

Podcast intro

Following on from episode 104's talk about Elis' beard in a bag, a listener witnessed an old man picking out his stubble in public and storing it in the plastic egg of a Kinder Surprise.

John's introduction of Elis

"To my left is the man who puts the 'L' in 'digital DJ (Welsh)'. "

Conversations and riffs

Hear some amazing Geordie and Northern Irish accents as Elis and John reenact John's post-gig drinks with some audience members in Newcastle. Apparently one of the guys he met had to shoot off at short notice to go to "a sex event" he'd been organising through his phone.

Find out which Madness songs John likes and doesn't like.

A riff about partners who don't drive criticising the partner who does all the driving and this winds up the latter, but is perhaps really about one partner needing some space.

As introduced in episode 107, chat about the first PCD-created video received for 'You Tube'. John encourages listeners to "Google it on YouTube" for further audio clips that might inspire more videos.

Elis comes up with an idea for a new feature called 'Shadow Handyman' in which he would shadow a handy man or woman around London learning how to do DIY stuff. He has two different jingle ideas. They try riffing it with a backdrop of sound effects that are mainly car-based (this might be what inspired the feature 'John Googles the Traffic' when they were covering the Johnny Vaughan show in later episodes). Meanwhile, John has only just realised the computer monitors in the studio are touch screen.

Textual Healing

A listener calls the show with a problem.

Christian is an Englishman living in Wales and has to pick either the England or Wales rugby team to support, even though he doesn't really follow rugby.

Humblebrag

More examples of that scourge of social media, the humblebrag.

When your muscular leg needs to catch up with your other muscular leg and you also include loads of gym hashtags in your post.

"When your boyfriend takes you to a Turkish restaurant and the belly dancer invites you up to dance with her and it turns out you are much better in belly dancing than her and everyone one likes you and gives you free stuff."

Winner Plays On

Elis and John face off in the weekly quiz on topics of their choice.

Winston Churchill (John) v Jonathan Davies the Welsh rugby player in the 1980s and 1990s (Elis). Elis wins 4-3.

Email of the Species

Listeners' emails into the show.

The inventor of email, Ray Tomlinson, sadly passed away during the week. You simply have to be on email.

Is there a correlation between Elis' increasing profile on BBC Three and the decline of the channel to online-only? (Elis: "It's not a decline, it's the embracing of the future.") John asks for an update from Elis on his chances of getting a cameo in the next series of sitcom 'Josh'. Elis makes something up to keep him happy.

The 'Keep It Session' Sessions

A special section at the end of the podcast for music recommendations.

Lou Reed's 2000 album 'Ecstasy' (John)
