Episode 181

Sherlock Robins, Leaking Vocal Emissions & Drawing John's Regret

Show broadcast on 5 August 2017

In what must be a radio first, John broadcasts down the line from under his duvet whilst up at the Edinburgh Festival. His face beamed down on an in-studio Elis from multiple screens, but even this Big Brother-esque nightmare scenario was not enough to put such an experienced broadcaster off! The boys bravely wade through some horrendous Humblebrags, and triumphantly banish shame from two shame-afflicted listeners. Chuck in a Paper Review, some Made Up Games, and Email of the Species, and you've got yourself a belter of a show.

John's introduction of Elis

"Elis' intro of John: to my north, we have the most fiscally prudent comedian on the British circuit, the inaugural winner of the Perrier Award for the most competitive ISA in stand-up comedy, it's John Robins. "

Conversations and riffs

John is coming down the line from Edinburgh this week and his face is being broadcasted on five screens in the studio.

PCD illustrators Lise Richardson and Jenny Grene have put together The Elis James & John Robins Colouring Experience (Book) with hand-drawn scenes from the past four years of the show that you can engage with. Available through the merch website, with a portion of proceeds going to charity!

Elis James' Light-Hearted Paper Review

Elis' selection of humorous stories from this week's newspapers.

Prisoners unhappy with the meals getting pals on the outside to throw sausages over the walls. The UK's biggest fish has died. Almost a quarter of us meet our best friend before the age of five.

John's Shame Well

John frees another listener of their shame.

Tired misunderstanding at a drive-thru McDonald's about the colour of your loyalty card. Doing the 'walk of shame' one morning in a bright tutu, fishnet tights and cowboy boots along the route of a half marathon.

Humblebrag

More examples of that scourge of social media, the humblebrag.

A woman with a "goddess body" is looking for a place to live no more than an hour outside of Berlin that will be ideal for her "vocal emissions" and watching her stretch marks and pores open and close.

Made-Up Games

Listeners suggest made-up games that Elis and John can play.

You each take a dictionary and someone chooses a page number at random and then the number of a word from that page. Whoever has the longest word wins. If it's a tie, use something arbitrary to decide which is the best word. During the show, an epic game of Not 20 Questions (see last week) just finished on the PCD Facebook group, clocking in at around 58 hours and 300-400 guesses.

The 'Keep It Session' Sessions

A special section at the end of the podcast for music recommendations.

Nothing to Celebrate' album by Red, a French artist (John)
