Episode 241

Easter Eggs, Johnny Pigs & Wee Jeans

Show broadcast on 20 October 2018

As far as Elis James is concerned - all knives and forks are the same. Why argue? On the cusp of heading out on the Holy Vible road, Elis & John put in a cracking performance this week. You can expect slightly more Queen than usual, a Welsh discussion about mince or mints, a sour (angry) taste and a bit of unwanted wee.

John's introduction of Elis

"To my left, heir to the Pengwellan (?) estate in Gwent. The semi-detached manor house is the most luxurious in all Wales, boasting a back garden with trampoline, conservatory, three power showers and double glazing throughout. "

Conversations and riffs

This week, John and Elis' new book The Holy Vible was published. Unfortunately there were issues with Amazon's ability to deal with delivering pre-orders on time, but, you know, it's a small family-run company so you have to cut them some slack.

John took Elis to the Queen pop-up shop in Carnaby Street and John had his picture taken next to the Freddie Mercury wax-work, which has since been given amusing Photoshop treatment on social media (some of it rather tawdry).

John saw a preview of the new Queen film but can't say too much about it until it is officially released. He also got to interview some of the cast on camera but unfortunately had basically wet himself just before doing the interview.

Both Elis and John had anxiety dreams this week, possibly related to the shenanigans with the Amazon book preordering process.

John and a caller talk about Queen trivia and memorabilia.

Elis James' Light-Hearted Paper Review

Elis' selection of humorous stories from this week's newspapers.

Nightclub till has ghost in it. The top 10 things over-55s would like to do. Chat about John accidentally punching himself in the balls. How to tell if you are middle-aged.

Humblebrag

More examples of that scourge of social media, the humblebrag.

Someone set off the smoke alarm with the steam from their body after working out so hard. Someone else has always been an athlete, since they were two years old.

Made-Up Games

Listeners suggest made-up games that Elis and John can play.

Maybe the first recorded instance of a game of 'Mints or Mince' on a Welsh-language radio show a few decades ago featuring 'Johnny Pigs'.

Top At What?: A country is named and a criteria that is is top of the list for, e.g. largest exporter of walnuts. Players then have to guess the figure associated, e.g. how many tonnes of walnuts exported. The closest to the actual answer wins. Use the Wikipedia page that lists all of this as the 'official' answer.

Tick Off a Taste

The gang try a new taste sensation sent in by a listener.

Toxic Waste sour sweets
